Stunt men demonstrated the dangers of not wearing rear seat belts at a Metropolitan Police Department event Saturday in Tokyo.

The event was held ahead of the June 1 enforcement of revisions to the Road Traffic Law that will oblige rear-seat passengers to wear seat belts.

Statistics show the fatality rate in car accidents for rear-seat passengers who don't buckle up is about three times higher than those who do.

In a simulated rear-end collision between a car moving at 40 kph and a stationary vehicle, a stunt man without a rear seat belt was thrown out of the car through the front windshield.

A second stuntman who wore a seat belt was not ejected from his seat.(IHT/Asahi: May 26,2008)

A revised Road Traffic Law took effect Sunday that requires passengers riding in the rear seats of vehicles to buckle their seat belts.

The revision passed the Diet in June last year. The revised law also obliges motorists aged 75 or older to place an orange and yellow momiji (maple) sticker on the outside of their vehicles.

Only about 10 percent of rear-seat passengers have regularly used seat belts, police said.(IHT/Asahi: June 2,2008)
